Ole Malmqvist Has Left Us |
Dear LC Friends.
I am really shocked by the sad news about Ole Malmqvist announced in ICC Banking Commission meetings in Paris last week. Today I receive an email from ICC that Ole has left us.
He is a member of the UCP 600 Drafting Group and is always willing to share his insight with others. According to ICC announcement in Paris, he had an accident while riding his motorcycle and was in a coma. He has retired for about 1 year.
I still remember that Ole was the one expert who did the first DOCDEX case with me back in 1997. We had strong debates in which he took a banker's perspective whilst I took a trade perspective. I lost due to minority as DOCDEX is nevertheless dominated by bankers. Despite this, I do appreciate that he put his heart to his work, although the return at that time was only USD500 for an DOCDEX expert and USD1,000 for the chair person. At that time fax was still the main communication tool as emails were not popular at that time. I still remember that my file for this case was 2 inch thick due to strong arguments amongst the parties.
He reminds me when we meet in Paris to keep my opinions simple and do not go too far on technical issues as bankers are not familiar with them. He is a quite and shy pipe smoker but humorous if you know him well.
Ole and Reinhardt are those who insist on document examination based solely on banker's perspectives that is good for bankers but not to traders. Nevertheless I respect their position.
Ole's incidence further confirms my decision to retire next year (serving only few customers who do not let me go) to allow me to work on my personal interest, Buddhism.
For those who work with Ole in ICC, he is still with us and lives in our hearts forever.
